Livability to be Focus of Economic Development Summit, June 22nd at ArcLight Cinemas

Building a More Livable Hollywood” is the theme of the 2017 Hollywood Economic Development Summit, which will take place on Thursday, June 22nd at the ArcLight Hollywood. The 23rd annual event will run from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., with networking beginning at 8 a.m., according to co-chairs Tim Grubbs of Communitas Design and Marty Shelton of NAI Capital Commercial. “As Hollywood continues to mature as an urban community, we want to be able to show how this can enhance its livability,” said Grubbs.

Networking will begin at 8 a.m. with the program starting at 9 a.m. Welcoming at the conference will be L.A. Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell. An opening keynote will be delivered by L.A. Planning Director Vince Bertoni.
 
A panel of new companies will also be featured, discussing “Commercial Development” and how new employers can benefit a community. Panelists include James Broenen, CFO of Fender Guitar; Patrick Bynum, SVP, Human Resources of Viacom; Ashley Gochnauer, General Manager of Kimpton Everly Hotel; and Kareem Saleh, Chief of Staff of ZestFinance. Jerry Neuman of Liner LLP will moderate.
 
A conversation will also be held with Relevant Group’s developers Grant King and Richard Heyman, to discuss their vision for the Selma Avenue corridor and their efforts at “place-making” by redeveloping a two-block stretch in that neighborhood. Angela Babcock of Stratiscope will interview.
 
A panel of residents will discuss how positive development can enhance the livability of a neighborhood and how they would like to see new development bring to the community. Participating on this panel will be Nyla Arslanian, President of Los Feliz Improvement Association, Dan Sadleir of Lights, Camera, Body!, Debbie Wehbe, local property owner, and Li Wen of Gensler. Phil Hart of Hart Realty Advisors will moderate.
 
Closing Keynote remarks will be provided by Professor David Sloane of the USC Urban Planning Department. He is an expert in urban history, cultural landscapes and health planning and will address what is needed as far as place-making to help Hollywood to achieve its potential. 
 
In addition, the Excellence in Economic Development Award will be presented this year to Hudson Pacific Properties, the firm responsible for the new Icon Development, and for revitalizing the Sunset-Bronson and Sunset-Gower studio lots. Chris Barton, EVP Development & Capital Investments will accept the award.
 
Attendees will be among the first to receive their copy of the popular Hollywood Economic Development Update 2017. The annual publication includes information on 92 projects in the pipeline for Hollywood.
