Time: 7:00 PM - 7:00 PM PDT
Event Description:

CITY HALL -- Los Angeles City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell and organizers of the first-ever Indigenous Peoples Day celebration on Monday announced the lineup of musical performances for the historic event, as well as the muralists who will participate in a live art demonstration during the day-long festivities planned for October 8.

The historic Indigenous Peoples Day celebration will take place on Monday, October 8, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., at City Hall and Grand Park in downtown Los Angeles. Activities will include: a sunrise ceremony, 5K Fun Run/Walk, Parade of Nations, Native American Pow Wow, panel sessions on trending topics related to Native Americans and the community, a fashion show, and a grand finale concert that will include a performance by critically-acclaimed Native American rock group REDBONE.

“This event will be a momentous day for Native Americans and for Angelenos,” said Councilmember O’Farrell, a member of the Wyandotte Nation.  “I want to send a message to other municipalities across the country that replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day is essential if we are to ever eliminate the false narrative that Christopher Columbus discovered America.”

O’Farrell announced Monday that muralists Levi Ponce and Votan Henriquez will create a ‘live art’ experience as part of the day-long festivities on October 8.

“As a Native Angeleno, it is an honor to pay tribute to our heritage, our ancestors, and our colorful city,” said Ponce. “Together, we will create art and express ourselves in a way that represents all of Los Angeles, inspired by the people and the land that is home to Native Americans.”
“I want to use this opportunity on October 8th to encourage people to stop and think,” said Henriquez. “I want people to take a moment, and think about where they’re standing, and who walked this land before them. Think about where we’ve been, and where we are today. As we participate in the celebration, we must be mindful of the genocide of our ancestors.”

In addition to the live art experience, the event will also feature a grand finale concert featuring Native American rock group REDBONE.
REDBONE was formed by brothers Pat and Lolly Vegas in Los Angeles. The group reached the Top 5 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in 1974 with the hit ‘Come and Get Your Love.’  The song saw a resurgence in popularity when it was featured in the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy.

Other performances on October 8 will include:  Jessa Calderon, Artson, Cody Blackbird Band, Drezus, PJ Vegas, and Mato Wayuhi.
